Canon and Nikon cameras
I was hunting for cameras and lenses to buy because i am a photography enthusiast, and boy are they expensive in Nigeria. I decided on a nikon d5300 dx format camera when I have money. It would be imported from usa with the help of a procurement and shipping service. The reason for wanting to buy it is to train myself in photography,so that as the years go past,I would be ready to take the bold step into wedding photography.
Then i also decided on a prime lens which is the nikon 50mm 1.8g. O my God,the sharpness and bokeh on this lens is delicious. I have seen video reviews and sample pictures and now I know that it is the lens for me. Even though they said it Is cheap there in usa at below 200 dollars, when you take into consideration the exchange rate, service charge by the procurement company and the shipping amount to nigeria,it becomes pretty expensive. I always have a saying though that God will provide and he would make it possible for me to buy the camera and begin my learning and exploration process.
The review of the camera is below:
We all know that canon and Nikon are two of the biggest players in the digital camera and lens industry, so I did a comparism of the two when thinking of the camera to buy. Canon and Nikon have wide varieties of cameras to choose from. They range from low budget cameras, (point and shoot & bridge cameras) to high budget cameras ( DSLR & MIRRORLESS ) Cameras. They both have an extensive well supported system with body’s, lenses, flash and everything photography that caters for everyone. From beginners to experts.
A lot of photographers even move between the two giants based on who is offering the latest technology and which one is cost effective. So I analysed some features and compared the two. Here is my analysis below.
The Nikon in terms of sensors have adopted a new sensor design that allows it eliminate the optical low pass filter without an abundance of moire. Filters are transparent optical elements that light passes through before coming in contact with the sensor, they serve the purpose of improving the image being recorded. Nikon’s new range of APS C Sensor cameras have eliminated it, but there is no reduction in the quality if image being recorded though. In the past, in comparison of a Nikon and canon camera within the same budget, a Nikon D800 and canon EOS 5D MARK III, it was noticed that the Nikon edged canon in terms of megapixels. Nikon D800 boasted of a 36.3 megapixel sensor, while the canon which was slightly higer packed a ‘mere’ 22.3 megapixel. But recently, canon seems more focused on megapixels. It was recently announced that they have released a new dslr full frame camera with an outrageous 50 megapixel sensor attached to it (Canon EOS 5DS).
I learnt that it is not enough to judge by only the megapixels of a camera. Although the larger the megapixels, the larger the prints and more cropping without affecting the image quality, but that is not gold standard of determining the camera that would have the overall best image quality.
In terms of lcd screens, the canon edges it a bit, Nikon just recently introduced a swiveling vari angle lens in their new range of Nikon d5100, d5200, d5300 and d5500. Meanwhile canon had introduced its first vari angle dslr since 2010, which was the EOS 60D, then followed by the EOS600D . They have a range of cameras with vari-angle screen, and some even come with touchscreens.
In speed, dslrs are generally slower than their mirrorless camera counterparts, but canon have recently been producing high end dslrs with high burst rate, for example their Canon EOS 7D Mark ii has a burst speed rate of 10fps,the Nikon D750 which is higher than this, has a burst speed rate of 6.5fps. Again when comparing one of their more expensive brands, canon wins yet again. Canon’s full frame 1Dx has a burst speed rate of 14fps while Nikon D4S has 11fps.
The canon cameras offer live view, where you can adjust the histogram while shooting, when you move it, you see the changes real time. Canon has a hybrid auto focus system in almost all its dslrs for live view still and movie shooting, while nikon’s hybrid auto focus system is currently restricted to its Nikon 1 series.
In video recording, due to their hybrid autofocus system, canon cameras can refocus while recording, and they are known for better auto focus tracking when they are recording. Nikon is catching up in this field, but canon edges it. Nikon has started producing cameras with a 60fps whereas the equivalent canon is stuck on 30fs.
Anyway, I reached my verdict, I was going to buy a Nikon D5300($549), alongside their Nikkor 50mm 1.8G lens ($229). I am buying the lens because I love bokeh’s (who doesn’t), and I heard that the lens is fantastic for taking bokeh pictures. I am going for the Nikon D5300 because I like the swivelling vari angle screen,I am a selfie freak….lol, and also because it is just perfect for my budget. Canon cameras are not bad either, but you cannot get one as good as the Nikon D5300 in that range. And due to exchange rate problems, I have a limited amount I can spend unless it would become too expensive for me. The specifications of the Nikon D5300 are:
